Really Living Green; Green Building Products

One of the largest current trends in the real estate market is the idea of creating an entire business or residence using solely green building products. As public concern for the environment increases, the demand for green buildings grows with the market, now including green apartment complexes, green office buildings, as well as green retail stores.

There are several different options to consider when deciding which green building products you would like to use in your new construction or renovation. The main thing to remember when judging whether or not a building product is truly green is whether or not the building materials are made using a recycled or renewable resource.

A good source of green building materials is to look for wood flooring, light fixtures, and other products in an old building that is being torn down to make room for new development. Especially in the city, there are many buildings being torn down every few weeks, so there are lots of options for harvesting good materials at a low cost. Often, the city or the owner of the building will offer a certain time for contractors, architects, and other materials purchasers to pay a small fee and come in to the building and harvest any and everything that may be available to use on their new construction. For someone who is searching for unusual materials at a low cost, but also wants to be green, recycling materials from older construction can be a great idea.

Other options for green materials can be purchased new and include materials that are created from either recycled products or renewable resources that have an extremely low impact on the environment. These are much more eco-friendly than using something that has to be created using a large amount of coal or that will take the destruction of something like trees to build, which take much longer to re-grow.

An easy option for replacing flooring without using wood or another material that cannot be either recycled or renewed, is using bamboo flooring. Bamboo has the same sophisticated look as wood, but it has a fraction of the impact on the environment. Bamboo flooring has become increasingly popular in the last several years and can now be found not only in private homes, but also in commercial buildings and some apartment complexes.

Another flooring option that is recyclable and renewable is cork. Cork is often taking the place of tile and vinyl flooring. It is sealed and is also extremely easy to maintain. The flooring is as sturdy as tile, however it is much easier on your joints than tile as it has a springy texture to it. A recycled material for your tile or countertop needs is the option of using recycled glass. Bits of recycled glass are embedded in cement or some other heavy tough material that is easy to maintain as well as relatively inexpensive to manufacture without the use of materials that are environmentally detrimental.

For anyone who wants to adopt a greener lifestyle, there are many different options available to you to be used as building products. Many of these products can be something you've found to recycle, or simply purchased from your local home building superstore.
